A Brief History
OUR BEGINNING
SAM292 began its life in 2004 as a local Greeley, Colorado magic club. The name of the club was the Town/Gown Wizards because the original members were students and a professor from the local university, the University of Northern Colorado (student Chris Kobayashi and Prof. Lloyd Worley; the "gown" of the name referring to the academic robes). The "town" part was filled by Paul Noffsinger who was, at the time, a banker.
At first, only three magicians attended our meetings. Then, Dr. Ron Dutton heard about us, and he began attending. Soon, as word spread, more and more attended. Today (March 2022), we average some 15 or so attending magicians. Some of our attending magicians drive an hour, one way, to attend our meetings!
At first, our Assembly met in various places (including the social hall of a Greeley church), but we finally settled on the meeting room of Kenny's Steak House on the second Saturday of each month, with lunch at 11 AM, and the meeting beginning at noon. Meetings usually last two hours.
OUR S.A.M. CHARTER
Chris, Lloyd, and Paul attended for the first time the famous Magic in the Rockies convention where they met officers from the S.A.M. who offered their help for our local group to apply to the S.A.M. for a charter. We applied for the Charter on March 7, 2008 and the Charter was officially presented to us on Sunday, January 4, 2009 and the Town/Gown Wizards became the Town/Gown Assembly #292 of The Society of American Magicians.
OUR HONORED DEAN
In honor of Assembly #292 member, Dr. Ron Dutton, the Assembly unanimously named him, on December 13, 2009, as our Assembly Dean, a very high honor in the S.A.M. We later applied for a name change on October 9, 2010 to further honor Dean Ron Dutton, a major support of our Assembly and long-time S.A.M. member. Our name change was approved in June of 2011 by the Officers of the S.A.M. at the annual S.A.M. convention, and we became The Dr. Ron Dutton Assembly #292 of the S.A.M.
Dr. Dutton passed away on August 2, 2019, having achieved international fame as a magic historian and collector of magicana. He is much missed.
FAMOUS MEMBERS
SAM #292 is honored to announce that three of our members have been on the cover of three different M.U.M. Magazines: Richard Nakata, Autumn Morning Star, and Dr. Ron Dutton.
ASSEMBLY CHARACTER
Our Assembly is known for three things:
Sometimes, we have to change our meeting times and places, so always check our calendar page HERE where we post changes.
Our Assembly is proud to have as active members four renowned magicians. First is retired professional magician and dove artist, Gary Kornfield, inventor of the Pro Dove Harness (available HERE). Additionally, our membership includes three M.U.M. Coverists! Below are the covers and table of contents for our three M.U.M. Coverists--Richard Nakata (2010), Autumn Morning Star (2013), and our Dean, Dr. Ron Dutton (2016).
